A Hibbing man has been arrested after stealing a St. Louis County Sheriff’s deputy’s squad car in Virginia Monday night and then leading deputies on a high speed chase.
According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy left a squad, that was thought to be locked, with the engine running outside the County Courthouse in Virginia.
A short time later, they realized the squad car was stolen and tracked the vehicle using GPS.
When authorities tried to pull the 21-year-old over, he waived a shotgun that was inside the squad out the driver’s window. The suspect eventually threw or dropped the firearm out of the window.
The pursuit continued outside Virginia and toward Tower.
The chase ended on Highway 169 in Pike Township after a St. Louis County Deputy executed a Pursuit Intervention Technique or PIT maneuver.
The suspect was taken into custody and is now in the St. Louis County Jail, pending charges.
No one was hurt, but the stolen squad car had “heavy damage.”
