BUCYRUS — A Bucyrus man was arrested Wednesday evening after stealing a Crawford County Sheriff’s Office cruiser resulting in a manhunt.

The chase crossed county lines into Wyandot County where the 28-year-old man was arrested.

According to Crawford County Sheriff Scott Kent, the incident began when Dehlen Hyden was served a protection order at 5:25 p.m. on South East Street and ordered to leave the residence. Hyden pulled a knife and threatened to harm himself, causing additional deputies and Bucyrus Police Department officers to respond.

After harming himself in the arm, he was handcuffed behind his back and placed in the back of a cruiser.

Hyden managed to get the handcuffs in front of his body and crawled through a window separating the front and back seats into front seat and began to drive away. BPD officers pursued but lost sight of the vehicle.

Information was released by the sheriff’s office to area agencies. A Wyandot County sheriff’s deputy spotted the cruiser at an old meat-packing plant in the village of Wyandot near the intersection of Ohio 231 and Ohio 294.

Kent said the responding units had to be creative with the pursuit as Hyden could hear communication on the cruiser’s scanner. Kent said Hyden changed frequencies and was speaking on the road cruisers and the jail frequencies but would not engage in actual conversation.

Crawford, Marion and Wyandot deputies and troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene. Law enforcement personnel surrounded the vehicle and it was discovered Hyden was no longer with the cruiser.

While on the scene a neighbor of the packing facility told law enforcement, he heard a gunshot, and it was discovered a rifle in the cruiser was missing a round of ammunition. Kent said it was unclear what Hyden shot at.

Hyden was located on the roof of the facility and still was handcuffed. He was arrested without any further incident for theft of a motor vehicle and taken to the Crawford County Justice Center.

Additional charges may be pending.

Kent said he will look into the procedures used by his deputies to see if any improvements may be made that could have kept the incident from happening.
