Thefts of cars and robberies of drivers have risen sharply this year, and as 2020 ends, they still appear numerous, and may be violent and sometimes dramatic, such as last week when a D.C. police car was stolen.

One of the most recent violent incidents occurred Monday evening in the 1100 block of Fourth Street SW. Robbers assaulted the victim and took his car, police said. On Saturday, robbers attacked a driver in daylight in the 3700 block of 12th Street NE and took her car, police said.

In the police car incident, a cruiser was taken last Tuesday in the Mount Pleasant area in an unusual occurrence even amid the rash of thefts.

According to a police report, the cruiser was taken on Mount Pleasant Street and spotted on Euclid Street NW. The vehicle fled but was eventually stopped. The pursuit may have been lively, based on the report. It said the charges included reckless driving and leaving after colliding.
