Albuquerque police say a woman and her accomplice were taken into custody on felony charges involving a stolen check at an Albuquerque bank Saturday.

According to police, Melissa Dominguez was able to slip out of her handcuffs and get behind the wheel of the police car.

Elvia and Sandra, who did not want to give out their last names, said a day of Christmas shopping took a turn when a woman driving a stolen car crashed into them in the intersection of Menaul and Washington.

“It was like a dream, I don’t know what’s happening and then we just crashed,” Elvia said.

Police say Dominguez was driving the stolen police vehicle when she ran a red light, crashing into the vehicle Elvia was driving, and then causing another vehicle to crash into her.

“It’s my understanding that the police car that caused the accident was stolen but someone who had been arrested was able to get out of her handcuffs,” Sandra said.

Officer Simon Drobik says Dominguez refused to give her name and still had handcuffs on her left arm when she was taken into custody again.

“I would also bet she has felony warrants for her arrest that’s how desperate this individual was to get away that she would steal a police car wreak havoc in the city and be out of control,” Drobik said.

Dominguez failed to appear in court in October for a list of charges, including aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.

“Trying to comprehend it was just so fast and just understanding how we got involved,” Sandra said.

Elvia and Sandra say while they feel lucky to be alive something needs to change.

“We have got to keep these people off the streets we need to take back our city, law abiding citizens need to take back their city,” Sandra said.

Officer Drobik says the person in the blue vehicle, involved in the crash, was to taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries.

Dominguez is now facing a string of charges including escape from custody, forgery and possession of a firearm by a felon.
