A man is in the Dubois County Jail after stealing a Hancock County deputy’s cruiser and driving it across state lines, through four different counties.

It all started around 2 Thursday morning when a Hancock County deputy responded to a disturbance call at an apartment complex in Lewisport.

According to the sheriff’s office, 35-year-old Jason Phillips, of Owensboro, was yelling and kicking in apartment doors at the complex.

The deputy was eventually able to take Phillips into custody, handcuff him and put him in the back of his cruiser. Authorities say Phillips was somehow able to get to the front of the deputy’s cruiser and drive away, with those handcuffs still on.

Phillips then led authorities on a multi-county high-speed chase that ended on 231 near the Huntingburg Airport.

Indiana State Police say authorities used stop sticks to end the chase.

Phillips, they say, resisted law enforcement when the chase ended. He was taken to the hospital to be evaluated and then to jail.

Phillips is facing several charges including resisting law enforcement, escape from lawful detention and auto theft.
