A police officer was injured near Hodiamont Avenue and Page Boulevard in North St. Louis shortly before noon, when a man attempted to carjack their unmarked police car. Officials said the officer’s injuries are minor and resulted from broken glass.

St. Louis Police Chief Lawrence O’Toole said detectives had pulled up to examine a black Nissan that matched the description of a car taken in a carjacking last month. When they did, a man got out, raised an AK-47 assault rifle and demanded their car.

Police exchanged gunfire, striking the suspect, who is expected to survive.

Another suspect or suspects are believed to have fled the scene, abandoning the car. The rifle, police said, had been stolen in Jefferson County, Mo.
