A man is in custody after a deputy-involved shooting and allegedly stealing the deputy’s patrol vehicle.

According to Kentucky State Police, at 1:45 p.m. Ohio County authorities received a call about a man slumped over a four wheeler on KY 85 West in the Centertown community.

Police say EMS was able to wake him up. They say he left the scene on the four wheeler and EMS believed he was intoxicated.

An Ohio County sheriff’s deputy was patrolling the area and noticed the four wheeler, still running and with the headlamp on, in front of a home in the 5100 block of KY 85 west. The deputy noticed that the door to the home was open as well.

As the deputy went inside to investigate and clear the home, police say the man ran from the home and was able to get in the deputy’s patrol vehicle, which was parked in front of the home.

Police say the deputy tried to get the man out of the vehicle, but the man started the vehicle.

According to police, the deputy pulled his service weapon and shot multiple times in an effort to stop the man.

At around 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, police say they were notified by the Ohio County dispatch that an Ohio County deputy was involved in a shooting around the 5100 block of KY 85, west of Centertown.

Ohio County authorities said the suspect allegedly took the deputy’s Ford SUV patrol vehicle and collided with another vehicle near Centertown. They say the suspect then fled the scene in the SUV and was last seen heading westbound on KY 85 toward McLean County.

Later, police say McLean County dispatch received a call about a single vehicle crash involving the patrol SUV on U.S. 431 and Doug Hill Road (KY 1412 W), about a half-mile south of Livermore.

KSP said it was reported that after he wrecked the SUV, the suspect ran under Doug Hill Road via a concrete tile and came up the embankment on the opposite side of the highway.

The suspect then allegedly got into a 2015 Jeep Cherokee that was parked on U.S. 431 while the driver stopped to help him. He then took off, heading south on U.S. 431.

Officers with the Madisonville Police Department found the stolen vehicle going westbound at a high rate of speed on KY 70 (Anton Road).

According to KSP, Madisonville officers followed the vehicle as it exited onto the Pennyrile Parkway at Exit 42. The chase then continued southbound until the vehicle left the parkway at Exit 40.

Police say the suspect went behind the Tech Center on Grapevine Road where he abandoned the vehicle in a field and took off on foot.

According to police, the suspect was found in the cellar of a home on Hartland Avenue where he was taken into custody.

He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital and later airlifted to a hospital in Evansville, Ind. where he is still being treated for a single gunshot wound to his chest.

Police say they believe the gunshot wound was from the encounter with the Ohio County deputy.

According to police, the man has not been charged; however, his identity will be released once he is officially charged.

The investigation is ongoing by KSP.

The Madisonville Police Department, Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department, Ohio County Sheriff’s Department, McLean County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife assisted with the investigation.
