A person is in custody after they were accused of stealing a police unit Friday.

Local law enforcement agencies were spotted at Hyatt Place along Gateway East near Trowbridge.

Police at the scene told KFOX14 that police officers had been trying to pull over a man who was driving a stolen Jeep Cherokee around 11 a.m.

A pursuit ensued throughout the Lower Valley when the driver fled from police, officials said.

At some point, the driver got out of the car and ran away on foot, then managed to get into an unmarked police vehicle and drive off, police said.

Helicopters and other police units were in the area trying to track down the man.

Authorities in the helicopters said they spotted the man heading into the hotel in south-central El Paso.

Police said the man was trying to hide inside the hotel, but was found and taken into custody.

People who witnessed the commotion say it was crazy to see.

“Earlier today, we saw two helicopters passing through Lomaland Drive, cause I was at my mother-in-law’s house, and then we got home and there was a lot of police units and red tape,” said Cyndi Gomez, who lives in the Lower Valley.

Officers said no one was injured. A police officer did fire his weapon, police said.

St. Pius School was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

Police are still investigating.
