A 26-year-old woman stole a police car Saturday and drove it the wrong way on Ocean Drive to evade arrest, police said.

About 3:55 p.m. police responded to several calls about a disturbance between a man and a woman at a bus stop near Airline Road and Lum Street, according to a Corpus Christi police news release.

When an officer approached the two, the man ran away and tried to jump a fence, injuring himself. While the officer was chasing the man, the woman got in the police car and left, the release states.

Another officer saw the woman drive the car down Airline Road heading to Ocean Drive with the emergency lights on. The officer followed the woman as she made a turn on Ocean Drive and drove a short distance on the wrong side of the road, the release states.

The woman then drove onto private property, got out of the car and attempted to flee.

Officers caught Rachel Vigueria and arrested her on suspicion of evading arrest and evading arrest with a vehicle. After investigation, officers found Vigueria had an outstanding Bexar County warrant on a family violence charge.

The man was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial to be treated for minor injuries he suffered after jumping the fence and is expected to be charged with evading arrest, a misdemeanor. The Caller-Times typically does not name people arrested on misdemeanor charges.

Vigueria remained in Nueces County Jail on Sunday and is not eligible for release because of the warrant, jail officials said.
