A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s sergeant was fatally shot Wednesday in Lancaster, authorities said, CBS Los Angeles reported.

Authorities say 53-year-old Steve Owen died at a hospital Wednesday afternoon, several hours after he was shot while responding to a report of a burglary in a neighborhood in Lancaster, north of Los Angeles.

Sheriff’s officials say other deputies fired shots at the suspect after he tried to steal a sheriff’s patrol car and rammed that vehicle into another patrol car while escaping.

Sheriff’s SWAT deputies were involved in a search for the suspect at a nearby Lancaster home.

During the search, the suspect was seen running through a backyard and attempting to scale a fence before he ultimately surrendered.

Minutes later, the suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for unknown injuries.

A sheriff’s deputy was also injured, but the cause and severity of the deputy’s injuries wasn’t immediately clear.

Several schools were placed on lockdown and students at nearby Antelope Valley College were told to shelter in place.
