A woman evaded capture from state police in Schoharie County for seven hours Sunday after she stole a trooper’s vehicle outside the county sheriff’s office.

At just after noon, a trooper picked up 27-year-old Tierra Scott in Richmondville on a burglary charge, Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond said. When they arrived at the sheriff’s office at around 12:20 p.m., the lone trooper transporting Scott stepped out of the car. When that happened, “the prisoner was able to apparently slip out of her handcuffs and hop into the driver’s seat of the troop car,” state police Captain Michael Tietz said.

The trooper who was driving the car tried to get back into the vehicle but Scott locked the doors, News 10 reports. “She put the vehicle in drive and drove away while the trooper was still holding onto the door handle,” Tietz said. The trooper, who was taken to Cobleskill Hospital, suffered minor injuries to his elbow and knee after being dragged for a short distance.

“A Schoharie County Sheriff’s deputy witnessed what was happening and this deputy discharged rounds at the troop car,” Tietz said. “No one was struck by the rounds.”

Scott drove away but ditched the car a short time later on Wetsel Hollow Road in Schoharie and fled on foot.

State police and sheriff’s deputies searched for hours in the area, even using a helicopter, before finding Scott around 7:30 p.m. in a wooded area on Grovenors Corners Road in Central Bridge, News 10 and the Times Union reports.

“We’re always happy when things turn out the way they turned out,” Tietz said. “Nobody was seriously hurt and we have our person in custody.” Tietz added that Scott apparently was only wearing socks on her feet while on the run.

News 10 reports Scott will be charged with felony escape, assault, reckless endangerment and grand larceny. Her bail has been set at $25,000 cash. She will appear in Schoharie Town Court again Monday at 5 p.m.
