A Wapato police car was stolen overnight Monday and recovered early Tuesday in Oregon.

Wapato police Chief Dave Simmons said they have video of a man taking the car from where it was parked at the police department around 8 p.m. Monday. It was later recovered and impounded by the Oregon State Police around 3 a.m. in The Dalles.

Simmons said it’s unclear how the man got in and started the car.

Any weapons or other equipment in the car have also been recovered.

“It appears the individual just took it for a joyride,” Simmons said.

There’s no evidence to suggest the person activated the lights or the siren of the car, he said. No one has been reported hurt or injured.

Police are not releasing the video showing the person who stole the car, but are looking for him, Simmons said.
