Newport News police arrested a man who tried to pull his girlfriend from a police vehicle Sunday morning. The man’s girlfriend was also arrested Sunday – police said she drove off in the police vehicle while officers were trying to take her boyfriend into custody.

Police first made contact with the couple about 1 a.m. Sunday when officers were sent to the Super 8 Motel at 6105 Jefferson Avenue, near Mercury Boulevard, to investigate reports of a suicidal person.

The person, 23-year-old Ebony Tashaun Perkins of the 6700 block of Osborne Turnpike in Richmond, voluntarily agreed to be taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, police said.

As officers placed Perkins in a police patrol vehicle, her boyfriend, 30-year-old Lamont Langhorne, tried to pull Perkins out, according to police. Police then arrested Langhorne, and he started fighting and hit an officer, causing injury, police said.

During the scuffle, Perkins got into the driver’s seat of the patrol vehicle and drove away. Police chased her onto Mercury Boulevard towards the James River Bridge, but gave up the chase due to the speed she was driving.

After Perkins drove over the bridge into Isle of Wight, she encountered a Virginia State Police and Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office patrol unit, who were on an unrelated call. Perkins then pulled behind a sheriff’s office vehicle and stopped.

Perkins was arrested and charged with vehicle theft, police said, and Langhorne was charged with obstruction of justice, disregarding law enforcement command, assault on law enforcement and malicious injury to law enforcement.
