The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has charged a suspect with fleeing a traffic stop and eventually stealing a patrol car.
Richard Barnes of Lithonia, Georgia allegedly crashed his own car in the Town of Lyons, then ran from the scene with a deputy in pursuit. The Sheriff’s Office says Barnes then fought with the deputy before stealing his police vehicle, eventually crashing that car as well.
Eventually he was taken into custody and is facing a number of charges, including second-degree Assault, Resisting Arrest, Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Mischief, Obstructing Governmental Administration and several traffic charges. Barnes is being held without bail in the Wayne County Jail.
The deputy suffered minor injuries during the confrontation.
