A Hauser woman is in custody after allegedly stealing a Coos County Sheriff’s Office cruiser and leading deputies on a joyride that ended when she crashed on Highway 38 in Douglas County.

Desirea K. Chapman, 33, was arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle on Tuesday morning.

A deputy was dispatched to Chapman’s Hauser residence at 9:13 a.m. following a report from a woman saying that “she wanted a gun to hunt suicidal subjects.”

The woman, Chapman, also said there was a subject in her home wanting to hurt her.

The deputy arrived to check on Chapman’s well-being and, after arriving at her Sandbug Road home, found she was not in any distress. However, inside the home, police found 63-year-old Robert Olson, who had a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest from the City of Medford.

As the deputy was securing and placing Olson in the back of his patrol vehicle, a marked 2013 Ford Explorer, Chapman allegedly jumped into the driver’s seat, locked the doors and drove off.

The deputy radioed to dispatch, but was the only officer in the area at the time. Additional deputies, North Bend police, tribal police and Oregon State Police troopers all responded to the call.

At 9:50 a.m., the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office alerted its Coos County counterpart that the stolen vehicle was discovered on Highway 38 going through Reedsport, and Douglas County deputies were in full pursuit.

The stolen cruiser struck four vehicles before finally crashing, at which point deputies arrested Chapman.

The incident is under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
