A Yamhill County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man in a confrontation near a McMinnville auto dealership along busy Oregon 99W Wednesday morning, police said.

The man’s name has not yet been released. The deputy, whose name also was not released, was not injured.

Capt. Tim Symons, McMinnville Police Department spokesman, said the incident began around 7:30 a.m., when the deputy stopped a motorist on Oregon 99W for a traffic violation.

Police are investigating preliminary reports that the motorist bolted from his vehicle, dropped a methamphetamine pipe and ran before trying to steal the deputy’s patrol car.

Symons said he could not confirm the reports, saying the incident remained under investigation.

A Yamhill County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man in the parking lot of a McMinnville used car dealership Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Yellow crime-scene tape was strung around the parking lot at Christensen Auto Sales, 3080 Oregon 99W. Symons said that’s where “the incident culminated,” but he declined to elaborate.

By early afternoon, many deputies and police officers had left the scene. A Yamhill County sheriff’s patrol car was towed away just after 2 p.m. Orange traffic cones and the crime-scene tape also were removed shortly afterward. Authorities said their investigation of the scene was completed by 2:30 p.m.

The incident is being investigated by the Yamhill County Major Crime Response Team, under the supervision of District Attorney Brad Berry. The team is composed of members of the McMinnville Police Department, the Newberg-Dundee Police Department, the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Officer, the Yamhill Police Department, the Carlton Police Department and Oregon State Police.

Oregon 99W remains open to traffic in both directions.
