The suspect was identified as a 34-year-old Salt Lake City resident, Journey Rose. Rose was arrested on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Andrew Wright said two deputies were notified by a passer-by that Rose was trying to get into their police vehicle. Lt. Wright said the vehicle was running, because some of their cars can now be started remotely, but it was locked.

While the deputies were talking to Rose, they were notified about another incident shortly before that. A Starbuck’s customer told dispatch that he saw a man entering a woman’s car, but she drove him off by hitting him with a shoe.

Rose reportedly admitted to officers he got into the woman’s car because he was confused. He also said he tried to enter the marked police car because he thought it belonged to a friend.

Rose was charged with two counts of attempted auto theft. He was also charged with criminal trespass because he was in Smith’s grocery, which had thrown him out during a previous incident. The report also said at the time, Rose had been discovered with drug paraphernalia and meth.
