A Hutto police officer has died after being struck with a car while attempting to arrest a suspect.

37-year-old Sgt. Christopher Kelley was killed in the line of duty Wednesday morning.

The Department of Public Safety says the suspect, Colby Ray Williamson, has been charged for his death.

Hutto police tried to make a traffic stop at Herrera Trail but Williamson sped away.

Williamson’s car struck a curb, spun out, and hit a fire hydrant. That’s when Williamson ran away.

According to authorities, Sgt. Kelley attempted to apprehend Williamson, and he responded by engaging in a struggle with Sgt. Kelley. Williamson then gained control of a Hutto Police Department vehicle and struck Sgt. Kelley with the vehicle.

During a news conference, Hutto City Manager Karen Daly says Sgt. Kelley leaves behind a wife and two children under the age of ten.

“Sgt. Kelley was very well liked. He lit up our lives every day,” Daly said.

Sgt. Kelley served Hutto for seven years.

Kelley came to Hutto PD after working for UT Police.

Before joining law enforcement, Sgt. Kelley was active duty in the United States Air Force.

“He serves his country, he serves his community, he loved his family, and that’s the kind of individual he was and it’s the kind if individual we will remember him by,” Daly said.

Kelley was one of 25 sworn police officers in Hutto.

The Williamson County Sheriffs Office has stepped up to respond to calls on Hutto so the police officers can be together.

“We all knew each other and we saw each other every day and it’s hard to imagine what it’s going to be like without Chris,” said Daly.

Williamson is in the Williamson county jail. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a public servant.

Texas Rangers are investigating Sgt. Kelley’s death.
