A Central Texas man is in custody Tuesday morning after leading police on a chase in a stolen ambulance.

A Belton fire official says this all started when that man escaped from the back of a Harker Heights police car early Tuesday morning.

He then went into the driver’s seat of that police car, sped off, and later crashed into a Harker Heights ambulance.

The man then got out of the police car and into the driver’s seat of the ambulance and sped away.

He led police on a chase from Harker Heights to Belton. The chase ended near the Simmons Road exit on Highway 190 eastbound after he lost control of the ambulance and rolled over.

The man was taken into custody.

It’s unclear at this time why he was in police custody in the first place.
