A Kansas City, Kan., police officer has died after being shot Monday by a man who went on to carjack several vehicles before he also was shot and taken into custody.

The officer, identified by local media as Brad Lancaster, was shot several times near the Kansas Speedway around 12:30 p.m. while investigating the report of a suspicious person, police said.

“Our detective fought a good fight, but unfortunately he died from his injuries @ approx 15:30 hours,” Chief of Police Terry Ziegler said in a tweet Monday evening.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Curtis Ayers, was wounded and reportedly in stable condition after a shootout near Bannister Road and Highway 71 in Kansas City, Mo. — some 30 miles from the original shooting scene.

Cops say the ordeal began shortly after noon when officers responded to a suspicious person call near 110th and State Ave. A fleeing Ayers opened fire, shooting the unnamed detective, who responded to the scene to assist.

Ayers then allegedly stole the detective’s unmarked police car and took off. From there, he carjacked a Toyota Camry nearby that had two children inside. That abandoned car was found in Basehor, Kan., where another carjack victim said a blood-covered Ayers had stolen a silver Ford Focus at gunpoint, the Kansas City Star reported.

Around 2:30 p.m., Ayers crashed that car into a concrete pillar at Bannister Road and Highway 71, where he ran off and tried again to carjack more vehicles, this time in Missouri. At that scene, cops say he shot a woman in the shoulder as he tried to steal her car. Police then arrived and opened fire, leaving Ayers with non-life threatening injuries.

The woman is also expected to survive.

Lancaster’s mother Carolyn Lancaster told the Star that Lancaster, 39, was a father of two and an Air Force veteran who served tours overseas including one in Kuwait.

“Our hearts are heavy with the senseless killing of Detective Brad Lancaster while in the line of duty today,” the Kansas City, Kansas Order of Police said in a statement.

“We ask that you give your thoughts to the Lancaster family and the members of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department during this difficult time.”
