A wanted criminal was arrested early Monday morning after he tried to steal a Stockton police patrol vehicle while officers were investigating another incident, police said.

Officers were checking on an alarm call about 12:40 a.m. in the 300 block of South Aurora Street when Davanta Crenshaw, 27, got into the driver’s seat of a patrol vehicle, the police department said.

Crenshaw tried to drive the vehicle away, but was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody without incident, police said.

Crenshaw was arrested on charges of attempted vehicle theft and warrants.
