A man resisting arrest punched and kicked two law enforcement officials and a police dog during the altercation Tuesday morning, authorities reported.

A passerby called 911 at about 5:40 a.m. to report a pedestrian in the area of I-5 northbound near Fourth Plain Boulevard, Sgt. Ryan Tanner said.

When a trooper responded, the suspect punched the trooper in the face and then ran across the freeway a few times, Tanner said. The trooper was not seriously injured.

At one point, the suspect tried to steal the trooper’s vehicle, Tanner said.

Units from other agencies responded to assist in detaining the man, but he refused commands to show his hands, Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said. Kapp said that officers had received reports that the man had a knife.

Police dog Tripp was deployed and bit the man, and the police dog and suspect rolled down the berm, Kapp said. Officers followed, but the man continued resisting. During the altercation, the suspect reportedly punched Tripp and kicked an officer, Kapp said.

An officer deployed a Taser, though it had no effect on the suspect, Kapp said. Eventually, officers got the man into handcuffs and he was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

Kapp said that the man, whose name was not released, will eventually face charges of a Department of Corrections warrant as well as suspicion of third-degree assault, harming a police dog and resisting arrest. Additional charges from the Washington State Patrol may be forthcoming.
