One man is in custody after officers say he took a patrol vehicle and led Rusk County deputies on a pursuit.

Shortly after midnight Friday, Rusk County Sheriff’s Office deputies saw a Toyota Corolla traveling south on U.S. 259 with defective tail lights.

When the driver was stopped, deputies learned the man was from the Houston area. The sheriff’s office says that during the stop, the suspect was able to gain access to one of the patrol vehicles on the scene and flee the location, continuing south.

The pursuit continued on FM 1798 to FM 95 and ended in a wooded area on Highway 315, just west of Highway 95. The suspect attempted to flee on foot, but failed to elude the deputies.

He was taken into custody after a short foot chase and transported to the Rusk County Jail. He is charged with evading and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Police have not released the suspect’s name.
