A man who police were tying to arrest for threatening to shoot people at a hamburger stand in Pasadena managed to break free, steal a police cruiser and lead officers on a short pursuit before his car was stopped by being rammed, a police lieutenant said today.

The bizarre incident began when police received a call at 9:47 p.m. form employees at a restaurant at 2100 E. Foothill that there was a man who was blocking the eatery’s driveway and threatening to shoot people, Pasadena police Lt. John Luna said.

“Our officers arrived at the scene about 9:53 p.m. and located the suspect,” Luna said. “As officers were trying to put the man in custody, he broke free made it to one of the police cruisers, and stole it.”

Luna said the man led police on a short pursuit that ended at 10:07 p.m. near the intersection of North Lake Avenue and East Claremont Street when another officer used his car to ram the stolen cruiser and bring it to a stop.

“Non-lethal weapons were also deployed to subdue the suspect,” Luna said.

The suspect who has not yet been booked was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, Luna added. No other injuries were reported.

The case remained under investigation by police.
