An inmate faces more charges after he allegedly stole a Reno police detective’s car and tried to escape.

Javier Angel Saldana, 30, faces several charges including grand larceny of a motor vehicle, a felony, and escape by non-felony prison, a gross misdemeanor. He was also charged with a misdemeanor possession of stolen property.

The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. on March 4, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said. Saldana was being held on misdemeanor charges at the time and was in the custody of a Reno police detective.

Investigators said they believe Saldana had access to the detective’s vehicle when the theft occured.

The vehicle was found intact later that Friday afternoon. Saldana was found and arrested two days later.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was asked to investigate Saldana’s actions and had found there was cause to add more charges, authorities said.
