02/13/17 Detroit, MI – Take Home Unmarked Impala Stolen From Officer’s Home – Recovered 2 Hours Later

An unmarked, take-home Detroit police car was stolen from the driveway of the police official, but has since been recovered, Detroit Police Department confirmed.

The 2004 black Chevy Impala, four-door, was parked in a driveway on the 2100 block of Hartwell — south of Fenkell and east of Schaefer — and last seen at 11 p.m. Sunday.

When the officer woke up at about 7 a.m., said Detroit police spokeswoman Kenyetta Hebron, the vehicle was missing from his driveway.

The vehicle was recovered about two hours later, at 9:05 a.m., with its catalytic converter missing, about three miles away in the area of Cheyenna and Chippewa, Hebron said. No arrests have yet been made. Police are investigating.

A group named Help Eliminate Auto Thefts, or HEAT, is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the catalytic converter, a spokesman for the organization said. HEAT offers rewards in car theft cases statewide in Michigan, and has aided in the recovery of hundreds of vehicles and paid out more than $4.3 million in rewards on some 2,461 paid tips since its creation in 1985.
