A Beaumont man is accused of stealing a police cruiser and leading police on a chase through the streets of Beaumont Saturday morning.

Police say Allen Keith Williams, 35, climbed into a K-9 officer’s unit that was on the side of the road near McDonald’s on Laurel and I-10. Police say the officer was performing a traffic stop at the time when Williams climbed into the unit that still had the K-9 in it. Police say Williams, who was not involved in the traffic stop, got into the driver’s seat and left. Dispatchers tracked the vehicle and officers eventually caught up with Williams, but he evaded police throughout the city and wrecked in the woods at College St and Dowlen Rd. Police say Williams refused to exit the vehicle but was removed after a lengthy struggle and arrested.

The K-9, Duke, was not injured in the incident.

Williams was then transported to the hospital for medical clearance. K-9 Duke was not injured during this incident but will be cleared by the veterinarian.

Williams is charged with felony theft, evading detention/arrest with a motor vehicle, attempting to take an officer’s weapon, and resisting arrest.
