A Coloma man is in jail after being accused of stealing a county squad car and leading deputies on a chase before crashing into a tree.

Levi R Hedding, 27, of Coloma faces charges of possession of heroin with intent to deliver, escape, operating a vehicle without owner’s consent, operating with a restricted controlled substance, reckless driving, obstructing/resisting an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating without a valid driver’s license, felony fleeing and felony bail jumping.

Members of the Adams and Marquette County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop about 10 p.m., Feb. 12, 2018, on a vehicle being operated by Hedding.

The stop occurred in the 2800 block of Wisconsin Highway 13 in Adams County. Hedding had active warrants for his arrest and was suspected of trafficking heroin to the area.

Hedding initially lied to deputies about his name and attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

While deputies were processing evidence at the scene, Hedding escaped through the rear window of an Adams County squad car, got into a Marquette County squad and fled the scene.

An 18-mile pursuit ensued involving several members of law enforcement from surrounding areas/agencies. The squad car stolen by Hedding eventually entered a ditch striking a tree on County Highway EE near Second Avenue in Adams County.

Hedding again attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by a Marquette County canine and deputies from both agencies.

Hedding was transported to Moundview Hospital for injuries received from the canine arrest.

He currently is in custody.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Central Wisconsin Drug Task Force, Wisconsin State Patrol, City of Adams Police Department and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.
