Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a vehicle Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) tried to stop on Hwy. 407 Friday evening drove the wrong way down an on ramp and collided head-on with other traffic.

A police cruiser was also stolen during the incident that injured a woman and two children.

Police are still searching for a suspect after recovering the stolen cruiser, abandoned in the Winston Churchill Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue area of Mississauga Friday night.

According to the SIU, the head-on crash occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on the ramp from Hwy. 410 to Hwy. 407 in Brampton.

An officer conducting traffic enforcement in the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 407 attempted to stop a vehicle.

The vehicle made a U-turn and drove down the ramp that connects the southbound 410 to the eastbound 407, according to the SIU.

It crashed into a second vehicle – injuring a 37-year-old female passenger in the second vehicle. She was transported to St. Michael’s Hospital with serious injuries and was scheduled to undergo surgery Saturday, the SIU reported.

A seven-year-old and a three-year-old in the fleeing vehicle were also taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to reports.

At some point, according to police, at least one suspect involved in the collision managed to steal a marked police cruiser.

The stolen cruiser was later tracked to the Winston Churchill Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue using GPS. OPP tactical officers and Peel Regional Police K-9 unit searched the area Friday night, but at police are still looking for at least one suspect.

The SIU has assigned five investigators, two forensic investigators, and one traffic reconstructionist as part of its investigation.
