A male suspect who was handcuffed in the back of police vehicle allegedly managed to get around to the front seat and race off in the car Friday morning.

The vehicle crashed into a concrete fence while attempting to flee down a back lane in the 1200 block of Alexander Avenue, said police.

People living in the area said speeds reached by the vehicle appeared dangerous.

The suspect was taken to hospital in stable condition, said officers.

A police officer also suffered injuries to his leg and hand and is being treated in hospital Friday afternoon.

Officers continue to investigate.
