WINNFIELD, La. (AP) - State police say that a handcuffed man in the back of a Winnfield police car got his hands in front of his body, crawled into the driver's seat and sped away, but died when he lost control and crashed.

Sergeant Julie Lewis says in a news release that 42-year-old Bobby Wayne Bishop of Winnfield, had been stopped Friday night on suspicion of drunken driving. She says he was left in the back of the squad car, his hands handcuffed behind him, while the police officer inventoried his vehicle.

She says Bishop lost control on a curve of US 84 East. He was thrown out of the car when it hit a light pole, and died instantly.

The car spun across the street and hit a second utility pole, then a big tree.

Lewis says the police chase lasted about three miles.
