WILMINGTON -- A man who attempted to shoplift from Wal-Mart and stole a police vehicle is now in the custody of police

Police say Shaun Thompson was trying to steal DVDs from the Wal-Mart off Market Street when employees noticed his suspicious behavior. Employees tried to wrestle him to the ground but Thompson slashed one of the employees on their arm and leg with a knife.

Thompson then ran off and a plainclothes officer tried to stop him. The man then fought with that officer and drove off in his unmarked car. The officer was injured in the attack.

Neighbors pointed out to police where Thompson was hiding after he wrecked the car.

Thompson will face numerous charges including assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery.
