Man Steals Wilmington, North Carolina K-9 Unit Vehicle
April 26, 2005, 04:27 PM

Wilmington Police officers responded to a call about a fight at Firebelly Lounge on North Front Street around two o'clock Tuesday morning. When the officers went inside to investigate, a man jumped into a K-9 unit vehicle with a police dog in the back. The suspect sped off against one-way traffic on Front Street. The cops found the K-9 car on Orange Street. A couple of blocks away on Jefferson street, authorities handcuffed two men and took them in for questioning. Police won't tell us if the two men helped pin 32 year old Jeffery Allen Lesher. A few hours later, police arrested Lesher, charging him with larceny of the vehicle and of the dog. Chief Ralph Evangelous tells NewsChannel 3 that the officers had to keep the vehicle running because it's the only way to let the dog out in an emergency. Evangelous adds, though, that someone should have stayed with the vehicle. No word if there will be any reprimand for the officers on scene.
