He'd led police on a chase twice; once in a stolen
car, once in a stolen police car

A man linked to at least six car thefts-- four of them
within the last week -- was busted in his walking shoes
Thursday afternoon when Wichita police spotted the
man on foot.

Police arrested Shawn Johnson, 23, after an acquaintance
tipped police that Johnson had just been inside an
apartment in the 400 block of West Central Avenue,
said Lt. Dennis Wilson.

"One of the officers observed him and attempted to
stop him," Wilson said.

Johnson led the officer on a short foot chase before he was
arrested and booked into Sedgwick County Jail, Wilson said.

Police arrested Johnson twice June 4 after two separate car
chases. Johnson first eluded officers in a stolen car, was
stopped and was arrested.

Shortly after the arrest, he squeezed through the back
window of the squad car where he was cuffed, and he
drove off, leading officers on a second chase in their
own car.

Police think Johnson is responsible for as many as four car
thefts and at least six separate shoplifting incidents since
June 8-- the day after he was released from jail. They've
also linked him to at least two car thefts and five shoplifting
incidents prior to his car chase arrests, Lt. Duffy Doyle said.

Johnson is being held in Sedgwick County Jail without
bond on auto theft charges and on $50,000 bond on new
issue theft.
