The deputy was in the midst of a traffic stop at Chestnut Street and Moore Avenue in Inkster when the man he has pulled over jumped out of his car, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said.
A short foot chase ensued before the suspect jumped into the corporal's patrol car and hit him as he sped off, the office said.
The suspect crashed the patrol car a block over on Williams Street after other officers joined the chase. He was arrested and has only been identified as a 32-year-old Dearborn Heights man. The office said he has a suspended license and other minor violation warrants.
The deputy, who is in his 30s, is critical at an area hospital for a broken leg, fractured ribs and some arm injuries.
According to the sheriff's office, he is a 15 year veteran, ranked as corporal and is married with two children.
