Disturbance Leads To Shooting

California Highway Patrol officer David DaSilva gathers information at the
scene of a crash where a naked woman slammed a Watsonville police car into a
minivan and a fence Saturday morning after she had been shot moments before on
Miles Lane.
A Watsonville police officer shot a naked 35-year old woman in the arm after
she reportedly stole a patrol car and fled from the scene of a domestic dispute
Saturday on Miles Lane about 6:30 a.m.
The woman, Lisa Isidro, was treated and released for a gunshot wound to her
right arm at Watsonville Community Hospital, police reported.
Officers responded to reports of a verbal dispute between Isidro and Bernardo
Vasquez, 22, at 30 Miles Lane Saturday morning. When a police officer arrived to
speak with a caller who reported the argument, Isidro fled from the house
without any clothing.
As she ran from the home in the nude, another officer arrived at the scene and
attempted to detain Isidro, who fought off the officer. When the officer
tried to subdue her with pepper spay, the spray had no effect and Isidro ran
into the officer’s running patrol car.
According to police, Isidro put the car in drive and tried to slam into the
officer with the vehicle. The officer responded by firing one round at the
suspect, who sped away from the scene before crashing at the corner of Miles
Lane and Santa Clara Street.
After smashing the patrol car into a fence at 71 Santa Clara Street, Isidro
reportedly fled on foot, but was caught in the immediate vicinity. The car
sustained major damage, while the officer involved was not hurt. Watsonville
police did not release the names of the officers involved in the incident.
The officer’s life was in danger when he shot Isidro, Lt. Ed Gluhan said.
Hitting the suspect in the arm was likely because she was in motion at the time.
“Police officers are trained to shoot to stop a threat,” he added. “They are not
trained specifically to hit an arm or a leg.”
According to Gluhan, Isidro and Vasquez, as well as the Miles Lane residence,
were known to police before the incident. He said Isidro appeared to have
been under the influence of drugs when she took the patrol car.
“The female involved was also charged with driving under the influence,” Gluhan
said. “We definitely feel that she was high on something other than alcohol.”
The pepper spray used on Isidro might have been ineffective because she was
under the influence of drugs or she may not have been as susceptible as others,
Gluhan said.
“Everyone responds differently,” he said. “It isn’t always effective.”
Santa Clara Street was closed for several hours while the Santa Cruz County
Sheriff’s Office, Watsonville Fire Department and American Medical Response
joined the Watsonville Police Department.
