S.C. deputy, woman shot; Suspect in custody
after standoff
WALTERBORO, S.C. - A man shot his girlfriend and a sheriff’s deputy on
Thursday, then stole a police cruiser and barricaded himself inside his home for
several hours before surrendering, police said.
The suspect’s girlfriend was shot in the face and shoulder, and was in critical,
but stable condition at a hospital, Colleton County Sheriff George Malone said.
The deputy, Sgt. Jackie Lawson, was shot in the shoulder and was expected to
recover, Malone said. The suspect, Marvin Lee Williams, 25, also was shot at
least once in the leg during the standoff with police.
The deputy was responding to a report of gunfire when he stopped a vehicle
coming from the direction of where shots were reportedly fired. That’s when
Lawson, a former state Highway Patrolman, was hit, the sheriff said.
“The suspect firing took his patrol car and left the scene,” Malone said.
Authorities chased Williams for about 10 miles through the rural county.
“The suspect wound up at his residence where he barricaded himself and fired
shots at the officers,” Malone said.
None of the officers at the home were shot. The sheriff said Williams was struck
at least once in the leg. He was taken to the hospital and his wounds were not
considered life-threatening. Malone said he did not know if Williams had an
attorney.
The sheriff said he and the suspect’s father were able to convince Williams to
surrender.
