UNION TOWNSHIP -- A township patrol car was stolen today during a police chase that ended with the arrest of two alleged car thieves, authorities said.

The incident unfolded at 11 a.m. on Stuyvesant Avenue when Union police saw three occupants inside a Jeep that was reported stolen from Jersey City, said Union Police Director Dan Zieser. Officers pursued the vehicle to Paine Street in Irvington, where four marked units tried to box in the Jeep.

But the Jeep rammed two of the police cars and then all three occupants ran out of the vehicle and fled on foot, with officers in pursuit, Zieser said. Two of the suspects were apprehended, but the third person ran back and drove away in a marked police unit.

A GPS tracking device pinpointed to police that the man abandoned the patrol car on Edwin Place in Newark, Zieser said. That person was not found.

Nothing was stolen from the vehicle, and there were no injuries reported among the police officers, Zieser said. Two of the occupants arrested — a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old male, both from Newark — are facing charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, with additional charges pending.
