Alabama - Tuscaloosa Sheriff's Vehicle Stolen - 100mph Chase - Crashes
NORTHPORT, Ala. A fugitive stole a Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office
vehicle today and led police on a chase before crashing near Northport.
A parole violator en route to state prison apparently stole the Dodge Durango
owned by the sheriff's office, authorities told The Tuscaloosa News for a story
on its Web site Monday. It wasn't clear how he got the vehicle, but a chase with
speeds of more than 100 miles per hour followed.
Authorities say the Durango collided with a Northport Police Department
vehicle on Old Fayette Road, before crashing on Morman Road off Alabama 1-71,
northwest of Northport.
Corporal Douglas Rhinehart of the Alabama State Troopers says the driver was
caught because the Durango's driver-side door jammed in the crash.
The driver was not immediately identified.
Northport police Lieutenant Kerry Card said Northport officer involved in the
collision did not appear to be seriously injured
