A man who stole a police car then crashed into a city bus downtown Monday has died from injuries suffered in the incident, Tucson police said.

The man was shot at by a police officer as he drove away in the officer’s police car, but it was not immediately known if he suffered gunshot wounds or died from injuries from the crash.

The incident began just before 4 p.m. near the Ronstadt Transit Center. The man apparently attempted to carjack a vehicle, but failed. Shot were fired in that incident, police said.

He then went south and attempted to carjack another vehicle, police said.

When that failed, the man ran south and was confronted by a police officer at Sixth Avenue and Broadway. The man knocked the officer down and drove off in the officer’s patrol car.

The officer ran after the car south on Sixth and fired several times at car, police said.

The car then crashed into a Sun Tran bus.

The man was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center, where he later died.

There were fourteen people on the bus, but none was injured. The police officer was not hurt.

The incident, which involved at least four crime scenes, has snarled downtown traffic all evening. Sixth Avenue is closed between Broadway and Sixteenth Street.
