Troutman, NC - Handcuffed Mocksville Woman From Stolen Car - Steals Troutman Patrol Car Then Escapes On Foot
Woman gets out of cuffs, steals patrol car
Statesville R&L June 2, 2009
A Mocksville woman managed to get out of her handcuffs and steal a Troutman
police car after she was detained in a stolen vehicle Monday night, authorities
said.
Amanda Simmons, 27, of Mocksville, faces charges of larceny of a motor vehicle,
possession of a stolen vehicle and resist, obstruct and delay, along with
outstanding warrants from Davie County for financial card fraud and authorized
use of a motor vehicle.
A second person, Jeremy White, 29, also of Mocksville, was charged with
possession of a stolen vehicle and resist, obstruct and delay.
Troutman Police Chief Matthew Selves said Officer Amy Emsinger responded to a
call at Four Brothers on North Main Street Monday about a stolen vehicle. A man
called and said he spotted a co-worker's vehicle, which had been stolen from
Davie County, at the convenience store.
Emsinger and Sgt. Joe Gentle arrived and detained the two people in the 2001
Dodge Durango, which officers confirmed was reported stolen. Emsinger handcuffed
Simmons and placed her in the back of the patrol car.
That car is an older patrol car and not equipped with a cage, Selves said.
Gentle detained White in his vehicle, and the two officers were outside of their
vehicles waiting confirmation from Davie County.
Simmons, who was handcuffed behind her back and belted into the car with a
seat belt, unbuckled the belt and ripped her cuffs off, Selves said. She then
climbed between the seats and took off in the patrol car.
Selves said Gentle took off in his patrol car and found Emsinger's car parked in
front of a vacant building in the Troutman Village shopping center. Simmons fled
on foot before Gentle's arrival, Selves said.
Emsinger was given a ride to the area by a citizen, and she located Simmons near
the entrance to Engineered Sintered Components on Old Murdock Road. Selves said
Simmons' wrists were bleeding from ripping the cuffs, and medical assistance was
requested.
Meanwhile, Gentle was back at the shopping center and having problems with
White, Selves said. He began to struggle with Gentle, who called for assistance
in getting the suspect back under control.
Selves said both were taken into custody without further incident, and the
Durango was returned to its owner in Mocksville
