3/25/02 TOULON, Ill. - A Stark County sheriff's deputy serving
a warrant on a Toulon man known for run-ins with authority
figures led to a running gunfight that killed three people and
wounded one man according to authorities.
Deputy Sheriff Adam Streicher, 23, was shot and killed as he
attempted to serve a misdemeanor warrant on Curtis Thompson
sometime that evening.
Still under investigation, authorities believe after shooting
the officer, Thompson apparently took the officers weapon and
squad car. He turned on the flashing red lights and then drove
around the block to the home of his feuding neighbors, James
and Janet Geisenhagen. Thompson shot and killed them both
bringing the death toll to three. Thompson then returned a few
minutes later and "rammed a police car (which was blocking
the street) hard enough to knock the cop car backward",
according to Joseph Williams, a neighbor across the street of Thompson.
Williams said Thompson remained in the deputy's car throughout
the gunfight and was shot and pulled out of the deputy's car.
Thompson was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, a
regional trauma center, where he was listed in critical condition late Friday.
