Surprise, Ariz. - A thief stole a police chief's cruiser, uniform, badge and gun
while he was working out at a gym Friday night, officers said.
Chief Daniel Hughes of the Surprise Police Department said he was working
out at Mountainside Gym in Surprise when someone broke into his locker sometime
between 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Police said Hughes discovered the thief had gained entry by cutting the lock
off his locker. Another locker was also broken into and a vehicle stolen,
officers said.
An all-points bulletin was issued for the recovery of the chief's unmarked 2007
White Chevy Tahoe SUV. The vehicle was recovered close by, but had been
ransacked, police said.
Police said it's too early to know if the chief was targeted or if it was a
random act.
