Brazen. That's how St. Louis police describe an incident in which two police cars were broken into as they sat parked at a city police station.
One police car was actually stolen and driven away from the station unnoticed.
The break-in and police car theft happened at St. Louis Police Central Patrol at Jefferson, between 5 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 a.m. Monday. The thieves broke into and rummaged through another unmarked police car.
Fortunately, police say no weapons were stolen.
The stolen cruiser was found ditched around 9 a.m. Monday in the 4200 block of Randall Place.
After taking her kids to school, a resident saw the car and police along with it. She's shocked it was a stolen police car.
Police are stepping up resources and efforts to crack down on car break-ins, especially downtown.
In just the last 24 hours, some 21 vehicles were reported broken into in the city, including several in a downtown parking garage at 9th and Cole.
Police are now looking into whether suspects involved in the police station incident could be responsible for multiple crimes.
Those suspects are still at large. Anyone with information in any auto break-in incidents is asked to call CrimeStoppers.
Police advise not leaving any
items inside parked cars.
