A St. Louis County policewoman shot an Affton man during an arrest attempt Friday after he ripped Taser barbs from his body, chased the officer down the street, tried to take her car and pulled a knife on her, authorities said.
Police said Jeffery C. Thompson, 34, of 8200 block of Marvale Lane, was in critical condition Friday after the shooting in front of his home about 10:30 am.
Police said Thompson argued and fought with the officer when she tried to arrest him on suspicion of several charges of burglary and violating a protection order stemming from a domestic incident Tuesday.
The officer first shot Thompson with a taser, but he yanked out the barbs and chased the officer down the block, said Lt. Chris Stocker of the St. Louis Police Department. After a short chase, Thompson darted into the officer's patrol car parked in front of the house in an attempt to take it.
When the officer ran back to stop him, Thompson pulled a knife on her and she fired several shots at him at close range, police said. He was taken to a hospital for surgery and is expected to survive.
Police did not identify the officer but said she is a 10-year veteran of the department. She was not injured.
County Police Chief Tim Fitch said, "Based on everything I know about the incident and situation, I would have reacted the same way she did."
Thompson was charged Friday with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, second-degree robbery, and four counts of first-degree burglary. His cash bail was set at $50,000. Police provided no details about the robbery and burglary charges.
Marvale Lane is in the Valcour Hills subdivision, southeast of Laclede Station and Heege roads.
On Tuesday, Thompson was charged with drug possession from a Sept. 9, 2010 traffic stop on Valcour Avenue near his home in which police confiscated capsules said to be filled with heroin, court records say.
In April, Thompson was sentenced to two years' probation for violating a protection order filled by an ex-girlfriend after he broke into her south St. Louis County home to retrieve items he claimed belonged to him. Terms of his probation included having having no contact with his ex-girlfriend. Thompson and the woman have a 4-year old son together, court records say. She could not be reached for comment Friday.
