At about 11:00 Wednesday night in Fabius Township, a St. Joseph County deputy pulled over a car on Roberts Rd. north of M-60.

The backseat passenger was arrested for an open container and possession of marijuana.

That suspect was put in the back seat of the patrol car, in handcuffs which were double locked.

The deputy went back to the car he pulled over to interview the other 2 people.

Thats when the suspect managed to get one of the cuffs off his hand and climbed through the small window in between the front and back seats and drove away.

He drove about 2 miles and crashed the car on M-60 near U.S. 131.

The patrol car rolled and landed on its top- it was totaled.

The suspect then took off running for about a mile to Three Rivers near the library.

He tried to hijack another car, but it turned out to be an under cover sheriff's deputy in an unmarked car, in uniform.

The suspect then gave up.

He was taken to Three Rivers Health and checked out but not injured.

He's now at the St. Joe County jail, booked on multiple charges: auto theft, malicious destruction of police property, escape, giving false information to a police officer, possession of pot with intent to deliver and open intoxicant in a motor vehicle... plus an outstanding warrant he was wanted on.

We're working on getting any dash cam video that may be in the patrol car.
