Staton Island, NY - Ex-Con - Carjacks - High Speed Chase - Fiery Crash - Punches Officer - Steals Patrol Car
The New York Post
April 27, 2007 -- A brazen ex-con took police on a wild ride on Staten
Island yesterday - from a high-speed chase to a carjacking to a fiery crash to
assaulting an officer to stealing a police car to finally getting caught,
authorities said.
A cop first spotted Everett Jones, 25, of Brooklyn, and his passenger in a gray
Toyota Camry at about 4:30 p.m. speeding on the West Shore Expressway.
When he tried to pull the car over, Jones - paroled in September for a 1999
robbery conviction - accelerated and tried to exit at Victory Boulevard, police
said.
There, the Camry rear-ended a white Ford van and caught fire, authorities said.
His passenger got out and fled, while Jones commandeered the van, cops said.
He allegedly forced the female van driver out, then sped off again as her
daughter, 15, jumped to safety.
Back on the West Shore, Jones lost control trying to exit and hit a light pole.
He then upped the ante by attacking the officer who'd been chasing him -
punching the cop and jumping in his patrol car, cops said.
As he pulled away in the cruiser, Jones was blocked by two unmarked police
cars and captured. His passenger was collared after calling his mother from a
local store
