KY3 News

SPRINGFIELD -- City police say a man who was suspected of being involved in a shooting managed to steal a patrol car while handcuffs were around his wrists on Monday afternoon. An officer had placed the

17-year-old man in the front seat of his patrol car with his hands restrained behind him.

An officer stopped the teenager for erratic driving in a truck on Nichols Street just east of Broadway Avenue about 2:20. Police say the officer then learned the man and his passenger were suspected of firing shots nearby in the 700

block of Webster Street shortly before the stop. Police haven't said what might have caused the shooting.

The officer said he handcuffed the teenager and the passenger, put the driver in the front seat and the passenger in the back seat of the unmarked patrol car. The officer then went to look for evidence in the truck, which was stolen.

The handcuffed teenager in the front seat managed to pull his legs through his handcuffed arms, so his arms were in front, scoot in front of the steering wheel and drive away.

The driving teenager abandoned the car about a half block away on Missouri Avenue and fled on foot. Officers arrested him about 3:30. He was hiding in the top of a shed behind a home on Scott Street.

The man was still wearing the handcuffs. Doctors treated him at a hospital for cuts on his hands that he suffered during the escape attempt.

Police hope the 17-year-old man will face several charges. They say they found evidence relating to the shooting on Webster in the stolen truck.
