STOLEN POLICE CAR CHASE
A transient slipped out of his handcuffs Friday and led police on a
wild chase through south Price in a stolen police car. The man was
initially arrested for public intoxication, said Price police Lt. Ed
Shook. The suspect was handcuffed with his hands behind his back
and placed in a patrol car. The vehicle's engine was running when
the man apparently "stepped through his handcuffs" and crawled
through an opening in a Plexiglas window separating the back seat
of the patrol car from the front seat, Shook said. The man
purportedly drove several blocks with police in pursuit. The stolen
car crashed into a stop sign, sped across the lawn of a church,
around the church parking lot and back across the lawn before
crashing into a parked car. Damage to the stolen patrol car is
estimated at $4,000. "The guy was under arrest for public
intoxication and because he had an outstanding warrant," said
Shook. "We'll also add escape from custody, felony evading and
motor vehicle theft charges to that."
