SOUTH BELMAR, N.J. A woman in handcuffs stole a police
cruiser Sunday night and led authorities on a 60-mile
chase before crashing into a tree on a college campus,
police said.

The woman had been arrested and placed in handcuffs because
of a motor vehicle violation, said Capt. George McCormack of
the South Belmar Police Department.

The woman's identity was not released.

Police were investigating whether the officer who made
the arrest left the police car unattended or the suspect
overpowered the officer, McCormack said.

Local and state police chased the stolen cruiser along the Garden
State Parkway to Exit 44 and toward Richard Stockton College
of New Jersey in Pomona, where the car crashed into a tree.

The woman was not injured, McCormack said. It was not
immediately clear whether others were injured.
